Article: Doctors’ Roles In Accident Cases: How Documentation Can Help Your Case

Doctors are often involved in auto accident cases when someone has been injured; yet few of us realize the importance of the doctor’s notes when it comes to resolving insurance claims. Why is this so important?

The pivotal role of doctors

According to Brian Labovick, of a car accident attorney in South Florida who specializes in auto accident cases, “Doctors play a very pivotal role in pursuing an accident case. Obviously, it’s most important for the person to get good medical care. The second thing that they need from their doctor is accurate medical documentation. There are doctors out there who are very good at documenting their files and very good at documenting causation. In other words, putting together what happened in the accident with what happened to the person physically for the trauma and being able to put one and one together so that you understand that the accident caused the injury.”

“You would be surprised at how many cases are not won because there is lack of documentation between the accident and the resulting injury. It’s important to get a doctor who can do that for you. The types of doctors that are used are injury-specific. A lot of people go to orthopedists, podiatrists, neurosurgeons or neurologists after an accident and afterwards go to therapists and chiropractors for therapy.” However, Labovick cautions accident victims to…

Seek the ‘right’ treatment,

Auto accident victims have a variety of options when it comes to medical treatment these days. While all forms may be valid, Labovick suggests that accident victims seek ‘traditional’ forms of treatment first. He explained, “Some people go to the chiropractor first. My suggestion is that you go to an orthopedist, either an MD or a DO (a doctor of osteopathic medicine who is licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication) first and then go to a chiropractor for therapy. I think that it’s important to get an allopathic (using conventional / traditional medical treatment) medical doctor looking at the file before you go to a homeopathic (using holistic medical treatment) doctor to look at the case, but that’s a personal preference.”
