Food contaminated with E. Coli bacteria can be life threatening when ingested and may cause kidney failure. Other symptoms include severe diarrhea and stomach cramps.
While steaks are not generally considered a high-risk of E. Coli, these products were mechanically tenderized and that process may have transferred the bacteria from the surface to inside of the products. This recall is categorized as a "Class I", the highest possible risk. The USDA classifies recalls as either Class I, II or III.
In Class I recalls, there is a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. In Class II recalls, there is a "remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product". Class III recalls generally do not cause adverse health consequences.
