The story of Cynthia Campbell, a 52 year nurse who is about to be dropped by her insurance now that she has cancer, is touching the hearts of Americans. She paid into the system for 30 years and says that her insurance company was always there for her – as long as she didn’t make a claim. While her story is making national news, her husband’s frustration is also touching lives.
Cynthia’s husband, Allen, is a former Marine and a disabled veteran. He has been watching his wife’s illness with complete frustration because there is absolutely nothing he can do. According to an article in the LA Times, he told a crowd at a recent rally in California, “Every night, throughout the night, I check to make certain my beloved wife and best friend is still alive and breathing. Her form of cancer is rare and fast moving and only two other people have ever been diagnosed with [her] form of cancer. Her fatal fatigue keeps her sleeping most days and nights. Yet, much to my own great sadness and shame, she spends most of her time on the internet trying to find a job that offers health insurance.”
Lack of insurance affects us all
As Mr. Campbell’s speech shows, the lack of affordable health care in America, and the continuing problem of insurance companies refusing to honor valid claims, affects not only those with health issues, but also those closest to them.
Michael Moore’s new film, Sicko, takes a hard look at the health care industry in America today and tells the tales of many in the same situation. One story in the film was especially powerful. It showed a married couple in their 60’s – professional people that raised six children and led a very typical, middle America type life. Then the husband had several heart attacks and the wife got cancer. Their insurance company denied claim after claim until they had to sell their house to pay their medical bills.
The film shows them moving into the cramped and musty basement of one of their children’s homes. The couple looked tired and beaten. The wife summed it up when she said that if anyone told me a few years ago that I would be living this kind of lifestyle; I would have said they were crazy!
Fight back
This story is sad and unfortunately, all too common. Insurers routinely don’t renew, cancel or rescind policies often for sole purpose of saving a buck. Stories such as this one should be the exception and not the rule. If your insurer has wrongfully denied coverage, please – contact us. We want to help.
