West Virginia surgical mesh lawsuit According to an article in the West Virginia Record, Rebecca Smith was implanted with C.R. Bard's Avaulta Anterior and Posterior BioSynthetic Support System to treat pelvic organ prolapse, or POP. However, the surgical mesh device caused her permanent injury, deformity and the loss of a bodily organ system. She has already undergone several corrective surgeries and will have to undergo others in the future – causing her severe physical and emotional pain. FDA has received thousands of injury reports The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 1,000 reports of adverse side effects concerning transvaginal surgical mesh devices used to treat POP and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The FDA has warned healthcare professionals that patients using the devices may experience erosion through vaginal epithelium, infection, pain, urinary problems, recurrence of prolapse and/or incontinence and bowel, bladder and blood vessel perforation during insertion.
