Polaris Industries, Inc. has recalled another 50,000 of its all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) due to defective electronic control modules that overheat and pose fire and burn hazards to riders. The company recalled over 60,000 ATVs in 2005. The current recall involves 40 select 2005 and 2006 model Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler 500 ATVs.

Medina, Minnesota based Polaris Industries has recalled another 50,000 units of its ATVs since its first recall of over 60,000 ATVs in 2005. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the company has received 372 reports of smoking and/or melted electronic control modules on the recalled ATVs, as well as 20 reports of fires, since its original recall in 2005.

Affected models: 2008 recall

The recall affects 2005 and 2006 Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler 500 ATVs that were sold by Polaris dealers from Polaris dealers from mid-2004 through January 2008 at prices between $3,800 and $7,900. The model and serial numbers are printed on a decal attached to the front side of the radiator (Sportsman) or the top of the front cab cover (Scrambler 500). Serial numbers are permanently stamped into the left frame rail behind the left front wheel and representative pictures of the ATVs are below. Consumer warnings

The CPCS recommends that consumers should disconnect the negative (black) battery cable from the battery when the ATV is not in use and contact their local Polaris dealer to schedule a free repair. Registered owners received direct mail notification of this recall.
