Can I bring a defamation of character lawsuit against my church?

Question Details:Accused by my church of seeing a man outside of my marriage. They sent a certified letter accusing me and revoking my right to congregate with my fellow churchgoers saying I was a reckless spirit and would not repent for this action. The accusations were completely inaccurate. They would not accept written or verbal evidence on my behalf. It has not only caused distress between myself and my husband but our five children have been affected as well. My reputation in the community has been damaged and my character has been challenged. I wish to seek punitive damages.

Yes, you may sue them--they have defamed you by publically making a false statement of fact and damaging your reputation and causing you distress. It would be worthwhile for you to consult with a local attorney on this matter; it seems like you should have a case.
