If I have 50/50 custody of my son and his mother has only had him 20% or less for past 8 years, can I have the custody changed?

California courts allow you to seek a modification of a child custody order if you can show a significant change of circumstances to support a modification.  Based on your question, it appears that what you may have is a timeshare arrangement problem, and not so much a custody issue.  If you share joint physical custody, then what you may need is an order modifying the "coparenting residential arrangement."
