Once a case has been settled how long does it usually take before client receives any money?

Question Details:I was involved in an accident with a semi truck almost 2 years ago. I found lawyer immediately and within 4 months my case was settled. It has been a year and half and I have yet to see any statements, receipts of medical bills being paid. Everytime I contact my lawyer (e-mail seems only way to do this) he states that its a long process and please to be more patient. He has a large caseload and will review my file as soon as he can. I have received some money in advances but not the full amount. Is this normal? How long before I make a formal complaint to the board?

You should have made that complaint at least six months ago.

The person investigating your complaint will be very interested in finding out, first of all, if the lawyer paid himself his share of your settlement.  If you've received some advances, my guess would be that the lawyer's "bill" has been paid in full, and if that's so, he's in serious trouble here.

I truly hope that this attorney isn't using your settlement money for his own purposes.  If so, he is probably going to be disbarred.  It's wrong, and it's sad, but it happens.
