What damages can be sued for under federal jurisdiction for a wrongful death?

Question Details:My mother was murdered. Due to the location of the murder it is under federal jurisdiction with special maritime law. What damages can be sued for under the federal jurisdiction; specifically can one sue for pain/suffering or grieving in addition to the monetary loss? What kind of burden of proof would be needed?
