Can an employer fire 2 employees just because they called out on the same day?

Question Details: My co-worker and I have called in twice on the same day once my car was out of commission so we car pulled and his car broke down. The second time was yesterday I had pulled a muscle in my back the night before and my co-worker had called in sick today we were threatened if we called in on the same day again we were terminated. Can he do that also all day he has harassed us this morning he entered the break room and said, "Look guys, the married couple decided to show up today" and later today my co-worker left for a doctor's appointment and he asked me where my husband went. I believe this is harassment but I'm not sure and worries about repercussions if I go to HR.
