What can I do if I am being taken to collections?

Question Details: I was invited to attend an expo show several months ago for my business; this is a trade show for the motorcycle industry. I was part of a program that helps new businesses in the motorcycle industry by giving us an advisor and I was a invited to this expo to pitch my company. I was not aware that they would be paying for our hotel and travel and took it upon myself to book a hotel. I was contacted by a company that said it was part of the expo and would help get me a better price for my hotel stay. So they got me a slightly better price and I canceled my first reservation that I had made. After I found out that my hotel was covered and that this company was not part of the expo but rather a troll company, I canceled my card and canceled the reservation with them. Yesterday I was contacted by that company's collection department saying I owed them the $600 that would have been for my hotel stay. That want proof that I canceled with them but I don't have proof and at the time I canceled with them they repeatedly hung up on me. What is my next course of action?
